We recognize the genius of Vincent van Gogh…but genius alone did not make him a legend. His brother Theo saw his dedication and struggle, believed in his talent, and supported him emotionally and financially. After Vincent’s death—and Theo’s death just six months later, Theo’s wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, carried their belief forward.
Johanna preserved Vincent’s paintings, published his letters, organized exhibitions, and persistently introduced his art and story to the world.
During his lifetime, Vincent was largely unknown and regarded as an erratic and troubled soul. Today, he is a legend. Not only because of his extraordinary desire to master his craft, his relentless practice, and his unwavering dedication, but also because the people who loved him believed in him.
Sometimes greatness needs someone who sees it, someone who stays, and someone who tells the world.
Few people possess Vincent’s greatness. Fewer still receive such love and support to successfully introduce a legend to the world.
