Most projects, whether in a large organisation or a small one, begin with some uncertainty. There may be competing views about where to start, who should be involved, what success looks like, and sometimes unresolved history between the people involved. How it is managed can have a significant impact on project success.
That’s where this project began. There was uncertainty about where to start, who needed to be involved, and some history between stakeholders that couldn’t simply be ignored. Working through that has been the first job.
In my approach to projects, people come first. This one starts with leadership and culture (who’s in charge, and how people work together) well before process or technology. Until it’s clear who is accountable, who belongs at the table, and what we’re trying to achieve, a plan is just a document. And history between people doesn’t disappear when a new project starts. It comes with them.
Next, I’ll share how I’m working through it.
I’m Dr Arthur Wilson. Something to think about.
