Melissa spent a short time in St John of God Murdoch hospital this week. It was not something we planned for. But here we are, on the other side of it, and she is well on the road to recovery.

St John of God Hospital is another one of Perth’s remarkable hospitals — modern, purposeful, world class in every sense. But that is not what stays with me. What stays with me is the people. The nurses, the doctors, the professionalism of everyone who touched her care. Warm. Competent. Present.

We are fortunate to have a place in both Applecross (city life) and Pemberton (country life). The proximity of Applecross place to Perth and its hospitals is great and is one of the reasons we have the place. It is proving its worth.
It is also great we live in a country that believes healthcare is not a privilege, it is a right.

I keep thinking about the United States. A country I admire in many ways, yet, the debate there continues about universal healthcare. I think the people in the richest country in the world deserve universal healthcare. They can afford it, so I am genuinely still surprised they don’t have it. In my view, when you strip away the politics, this is not actually a complicated question. It is about the people. It has always been about the people. The people deserve better.
Today, I am simply grateful that all my Australian family and friends access to world class healthcare here…
I’m Dr Arthur Wilson. Something to think about.
